“Drug Delivery Through Skin Using Octopus Suction Cup Principle” – MIMETICS Secures Seed Investment

MIMETICS, a startup providing skincare and medical solutions through biomimetic technology, announced on the 18th that it has secured seed investment from FuturePlay and Mashup Ventures. The investment amount was not disclosed.

Founded in 2019 as a student startup at Sungkyunkwan University, MIMETICS has conducted over five years of R&D in collaboration with Professor Chang-hyun Bang from the Department of Chemical and Polymer Engineering and his research team, accumulating extensive data. To date, the company has completed four technology transfers from Sungkyunkwan University and filed over 30 domestic and international patents.

Inspired by the three-dimensional dome structure of octopus suction cups, which maintains excellent adhesion in various environments such as water, silicone oil, and humid skin, MIMETICS developed a wearable patch. The patch creates a channel in the stratum corneum through negative pressure, enabling effective delivery of drugs that previously struggled to penetrate the skin. This includes molecules over 500 Daltons, such as hyaluronic acid and peptides, with penetration depth reportedly increased up to threefold.

Masang Hyun, Executive Director at FuturePlay and lead investor, stated, “MIMETICS’ biomimetic core technology offers not only outstanding drug delivery efficacy but also the brand value of nature itself. We believe this technology can expand into new categories, such as skin biomimetics, and reshape the beauty market.”

CEO Hyung-gi Park of MIMETICS added, “Our safe, nature-inspired skin adhesion technology can be applied across cosmetics, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals. This year, through our own brand, ‘Poredoor,’ we plan to introduce an intensive skincare method and a PDC (Pore Control Key) product lineup to manage skin effectively.”
