Aving News Editor-in-Chief Jihoon Choi conducted an interview on the technology and overseas market expansion strategy of the startup Mimetics, which participated in CES 2024 in Las Vegas. As a CES 2024 Innovation Award judge, Choi discussed in depth with Mimetics CEO Hyung-ki Park the achievements following the CES 2024 exhibition and the company’s future plans.

Mimetics is a startup driving innovation in the beauty and medical industries through biomimetic technology. Founded in 2017, the company developed a transdermal drug delivery patch that enhances skin absorption by mimicking the adhesive structure of octopus suction cups. This technology gained attention after CEO Hyung-ki Park’s research was featured as a cover paper in Nature.

In particular, the octopus-inspired adhesive patch increases the absorption of cosmetic or medical substances applied to the skin by 5 to 6 times—and even 2 to 3 times more than conventional microneedle products. This performance greatly helps maximize the effectiveness of various beauty and medical products.

Domestically, Mimetics is pursuing collaborations with companies such as Amorepacific, LG Household & Health Care, APR, Chosun Beauty, and Skin Angel. In the global market, it is conducting an open innovation project with L’Oréal. The company has also signed an NDA with Japan’s Nichiban and is developing medical products such as wound dressings, atopic dermatitis treatments, and burn creams.

In addition, Mimetics is engaging with global companies including the Louvre Museum and Huawei, planning to expand its technology into areas such as underwater grippers, strapless wearable devices, and reusable adhesive-free underwear.

CEO Hyung-ki Park stated, “Mimetics is positioned as a beauty tech company, and we are continuously focusing on research and development to advance our products and expand our business. We will continue to collaborate with various domestic and international companies to deliver innovative products recognized in the global market.” He added, “Next year at CES, we plan to showcase new technologies and products, which will create even more business opportunities.”

Meanwhile, Aving News continues to explore key issues discussed at CES 2024 and shares innovative ideas and visions through interviews with participating company representatives. This approach allows the outlet to engage with the public and communicate the messages of the innovative companies that participated in CES 2024.
